In October 2003, the Harrisburg Area Alumni Chapter made a five-year pledge of $25,000 (to be raised from its sports card shows) to IUP – with $15,000 designated toward the campus’s new Regional Development Center and $10,000 designated to the Chapter’s Scholarship Fund. This pledge is made in support of IUP’s new Gateways to Opportunity capital campaign to raise $34 million for the Regional Development Center and other significant educational projects.

The Chapter is pleased to announce that it surpassed its pledge amount in less than four years, giving the campaign $20,000 for the new center and $12,500 for the Chapter's scholarship fund. At the IUP Council of Trustees meeting of March 9, 2007, the Trustees announced a number of resolutions including ones that will name the new center the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex and that will name a classroom at the new center after the Harrisburg Area IUP Alumni Chapter in honor of its gift to this capital campaign. Moreover, the portion of the Chapter's gift that will be used for the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex will receive an equal match from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex, a $40 million structure, to be built on the edge of the University campus and be partially funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is a partnership between IUP and the regional community. The Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex, which will include state-of-the-art corporate training, conferences, and high technology linkages, will enhance regional economic revitalization and provide new facilities for the region and IUP. The new center will also house the administrative offices for the University’s John P. Murtha Institute for Homeland Security and the headquarters for IUP’s Research Institute.
